"Truly the best of W.A.S.P." 2010-03-08
By Tommy Morais (New Brunswick, Canada)
In the 1980s there were basically two types of metal, one was hair metal which had a pop sound to it, was more commercial and on radio, and there was the heavier metal with trash, heavy and other genres. W.A.S.P. are one of those heavier bands (although they emerged from L.A. home of many hair metal bands) who had a hardcore attitude and clearly weren't another hair metal band. They certainly weren't as heavy as some of the other bands out there and they have often been mistaken for a hair-metal band which they're not, if they are then they should be thought of as a heavy hair metal band. When they started and released their self-titled album in 1984 (later certified gold) they were pretty heavy. W.A.S.P. is still around today fronted by leader Blackie Lawless but they aren't remembered as much as more famous 80s bands such as Motley Crue. They never achieved much success but over the years they made some terrific music and remained true which is why I find them so enjoyable.

It's great to see that the W.A.S.P. discography received a well deserved two disc, career-spawning compilation. In most cases the "Greatest Hits" compilation are not recommended but this one is perfect and I feel it does justice to the band. Besides unless you are a hardcore fan I doubt you will buy all of the band's albums so this compilation gives a good taste of the band. In a way this is a more complete reissue of The Best of The Best: 1984-2000, Vol 1 which only had 15 songs and a little different song listing, in fact it they even have an almost identical album cover. The stuff you would expect to be here like Animal (F*** like a beast) and Wild Child is here, almost no surprise.

To me disc 1 is the superior one as it has their earlier material which I feel is a little stronger than on the second one. That doesn't mean the second disc is bad, it's also good. I like the track listing and they picked the best of this amazing band and put it together. Usually there are things missing on compilations but not here, everything is great. The booklets, the songs, even the packaging which comes in different case than my other CDs, it all made it special to me.

32 of the best W.A.S.P. songs is enough for you to love them, if you haven't yet checked them out and you're a fan of 80s metal you should definitely get this. The booklet also gives an excellent and very detailed biography of the band, a great overview of their works. In a way W.A.S.P. is the opposite of the hair metal band, they don't have a pop sound to them and they're pretty dark in their music and imagine, controversial, plus they were never really popular. They're a good band and they're sort of a well-kept secret, with this greatest hits collection you truly get the best of the best.

"Best band of their type at the time." 2010-01-09
By Danny (South Philly)
When it comes to 80s metal, I gravitate more towards the aggressive sounds of thrash metal. There's a raw purity in that music that the glam bands of the day couldn't touch. Whether or not WASP qualify as a glam metal outfit is up to the listener's ears, but these guys definitely had more to do with Motley Crue than Sodom.

To say that WASP were better than Poison or Bon Jovi is an understatement. Mainstream metal wouldn't see a band that rocks this hard until Guns N' Roses burst on the scene three years later. WASP's creatively titled debut, WASP, remains their best album. Blackie Lawless had a real knack for writing catchy tunes with a playful bite. This is one of those albums you want to crank in your car stereo during a Saturday night drinking binge. WASP walks a fine line with this album but it never falters. It never succumbs to the lameness prevalent with so many of their peers. It rocks through and through. It's a mindless blast.

"Glad Howland isn't on this one" 2009-11-24
By Sin City Swinger (Sin City 666)
WASP is so much better when Stet Howland isn't in the band.
Blackie was smart to fire that idiot.
I know nobody really knows who he is as he's nothing more than a bar star.
Such a loser.
LONG LIVE WASP!
Great album - great songs.

"I am Blackie Lawless get me out of here!" 2010-01-24
By S. Mehaffey (Los Angeles)
I heard a great WASP story back in the 80s: WASP had rented out a soundstage for 3 weeks, they had their whole backline set up, the full stage set. Everything was set up perfectly; guitars on stands, mics, drums, lights, I mean mirror ball, the whole 9. WASP came and went at all hours of the day and night, always had sunglasses on..day and night. Lots of women, tons of vodka, drugs, they even had a jacuzzi set up. Did not touch their instruments once. Not to tune, not just to pick up and fool around for a second and put it down....nothing. So here we are with this long winded pile of pie holes, really this album is a pile of crap. It's good crap mind you, but crap nonetheless. Blackie actually spending some time getting some good sounds, his voice sounds better than ever, but also sounding tired and frustrated. Somehow grafting the same exact guitar solo onto every song. Desparately writing for the radio ("Restless Gypsy"-Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone"). "King Of Sodom" rules, as does "Easy Livin'", but "Mantronic" reveals an artist at the end of his rope, he can't fool himself. Gotta love the cover.

"The only wasp killer that works!" 2010-04-11
By Melissa Elliott (USA)
The fatal funnel is so easy to use and is the only wasp catcher/ killer I've found that works! I've seen some complaints that they're too difficult to use, I'm sorry, but it doesn't get any easier. You take an empty plastic bottle, use a sharp razor knife and cut a cross (not a circle), stick in the fatal funnel and poor in some apple juice. I was able to make 4 in a matter of 15 minutes. I caught 50 wasps in the first day!

"double beat drumming percussions just jumps out at you" 2010-05-14
By Sl
This is a four star release for many of the reasons mentioned above. The key is to having a serious sound system that can crank out some very clear bass and drums. The great double beat drumming percussions just jumps out at you like very few other relaeses from any other rock band. Try it on your self and make your own judgement if it's then a 5! -- a must have in your collection.

"5 STARS for a damn good reason!" 2009-12-30
By A. Hecht (Israel)
If you think the following 5 are classical MUST albums, then run and get "The Crimson Idol", you will be a proud owner!

You know these albums right..?

1. Slayer - South of heaven
2. The Cult - Sonic Temple
3. Metallica - Master of puppets
4. G & R - appetite for distraction
5. Megadeth - Rust I peace

The crimson idol is right up there with rest. It manages to be 2 things at the same time: a concept album that tells the story of a young boy who becomes a rock & roll star and faces his shattered dream - and - strong accurate exploding songs, standing each by itself as individuals.

The rhythms, the story evolving from track to track, the guitar solos, the sounds of running drums, and the heartbreaking ballad towards the inevitable end "hold on to my heart" which makes you sink deep into the pain in this young man heart ,who tries to find salvation in love.

Listen to the album, read the lyrics, feel the work of art, and you will take a deep journey through the soul of a young boy's soul who is raised in the sensation of "I'm the boy only the mirror sees".

 "Nice effort....." 2009-11-28
By Richard L. Edwards (Cedar Park, Texas United States)
I have to say, that it sounds like a WASP / Blackie Lawless release and it is a good one. WASP are true to form and have never given in to the trend albeit KFD was to industrial, the worst WASP release to date. Dominator is straight forward metal and its to bad that this type of music is not more relevant today. Two thumbs up.
